About

History

      Preventive and social medicine, a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention of disease and bring the awareness of the health in the society. The department was established at the same time when Medical College Bhavnagar was inaugurated, that was in the year 1995. Dr. A.R.N. Setalvad was first Professor & Head of the department. Present Professor & Head, Dr. M.P. Singh joined on 1st December 1998.

6. SAEP ( School adolescent education program): The department has taken the project of School adolescent education program in 37 schools of Botad Taluka of Bhavnagar district. The program is funded by Gujarat AIDS Control Society.


7. MSU (Micro nutrient support unit): Department is running this unit for the monitoring and supervision of Adolescent Girls’ Anemia Control Program, Vitamin – A biannual round and Universal Salt Iodization programs in the Bhavnagar and Amreli districts.

IDD workshop

PSBH Workshop

The department organized the PSBH (Problem Solving for Better Health) workshop for undergraduate students. The workshop is intended to create awareness and encourage undergraduate students about research methodology.

IPPI Boosting

The department took up the project to boost up booth coverage IPPI in the area of Bortalav area in Bhavnagar city in October 2004. The project increased the booth coverage significantly. The project was funded by UNICEF Gujarat.

The department has successfully organized HIV/AIDS quiz for undergraduate students. This activity was organized under the banner of IAPSM (Gujarat Chapter) and sponsored by GSACS. Mr. Suhrad Banugaria & Mr. Zoheb Qazi were winner of the event. They represented the college at State level.

Arogya Mela

The department was actively involved in the organization of Arogya Mela in 9 wards of Bhavnagar city as per the instructions of Government of Gujarat. Dr. Q.H. Khan was appointed as over all Coordinator for this event.

I phase

Including information to the subjects of Demography, Health economics, Medical Sociology, Hospital management, Behavioral sciences inclusive of Psychiatry.

Objectives

Knowledge

The student shall be able to:

1. Explain the principles of sociology including demographic population dynamics
2. Identify social factors related to health, disease and disability in the context of urban and rural societies;
3. Appreciate the impact of urbanization on health and disease;
4. Observe and interpret the dynamics of community behavior;
5. Describe the elements of normal psychology and social psychology;
6. Observe the principles of practice of medicine in hospital and community settings.

Skills

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to make use of:

1. Principles of practice of medicine in hospital and community settings and familiarization with elementary nursing practices;
2. Art of communication with patients including history taking and medico-social work.

Teaching of community medicine shall be both theoretical as well as practical. The practical aspects of the training programme shall include visits to the health establishments and to the community where health intervention programmes are in operation.

In order to inculcate in the minds of the students the basic concept of community medicine to be introduced in this phase of training, it is suggested that the detailed curriculum drawn shall include at least 30 hours of lectures, demonstrations, seminars etc. together with at-least 15 visits of two hours each.

II and III phase

Goal

The broad goal of the teaching of undergraduate students in community medicine is to prepare them to function as community and first level physician in accordance with the institutional goals.

Objectives

At the end of the course, the student shall be able to

1. Describe the health care delivery system including rehabilitation of the disables in the country;
2. Describe the National Health Programmes with particular emphasis on maternal and child health programmes, family welfare planning and population control;
3. List epidemiological methods and describe their application to communicable and non-communicable diseases in the community or hospital situation;
4. Apply bio-statistical methods and techniques;
5. outline the demographic pattern of the country and appreciate the roles of individual, family milieu in health and disease;
6. Describe the health information system;
7. Enumerate the principles and components of primary health care and the national health policies to achieve the goal of 'Health for all';
8. Identify the environmental and occupational hazards and their control;
9. Describe the importance of water and sanitation in human health;
10. To understand the principles of health economics, health administration and health education in relation to community.

At the end of course, the student should be able to

1. Use Epidemiology as a scientific tool to make rational decisions relevant to community and individual patient intervention;
2. Collect, analyze, interpret and present simple community and hospital based data;
3. Diagnose and manage common health problems and emergencies at the individual, family and community levels keeping in mind the existing health care resources and in the context of the prevailing socio-cultural believes;

Evaluation

For the evaluation of students there is a provision for two internal examinations, one preliminary examination and at the end of seventh semester, there will be University examination along with the subjects of Ophthalmology and E.N.T.

I Internal Examination:
         Will be conducted after the completion of 4th semester and will include the course covered till date. The examination will comprise of Theory and Practical

II Internal Examination:
         Will be conducted after the completion of 6th semester and will include the course covered after I Internal examination. The examination will comprise of Theory and Practical

Preliminary Examination:
         Will be conducted one month before the University Examination and it will cover the whole course. The examination will comprise of Theory and Practical.

Extra Activity

IMNCI Training Program : Integrated Management of Neonatal & Childhood illness: The department has been assigned the responsibility of conducting training of Medical Officers, Staff Nurses of Bhavnagar,Amreli & Junagadh districts along with TOT for health workers. The department has already completed TOT of health- workers and 3 batches of Medical Officers. The training of Staff Nurses is going to start from 29th August 2006.

MSU : Micronutrient Support Unit
Established in Sept. 2005 with the support of UNICEF & Govt. of Gujarat.Main activities of MSU are monitoring & supervision of following;

Presently this unit is looking after Bhavnagar , Amreli ,Junagadh and Surendranagar districts.

SAEP :School Adolescent Education Program ( sponsored by Gujarat State AIDS Control Society)

This program was taken up by our department in 2005-06, in 38 schools of Botad & Gadhda Taluka of Bhavnagar district. 57 Nodal and 97 peer educators were trained by dept. faculties for four days workshop at Botad. These trained nodal teachers and PE trained 4793 students of 9th & 11th standard of their school. All School did 16 hrs of formal teaching about HIV/AIDS, Growing up, life skills etc. In addition , Celebration of World AIDS Day, World Blood Donation Day, Rallies to increase awareness amongst local People, essay, drawing, slogan competition, debated, role play ,drama were performed by schools to Increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in other students of school.All these activities were supervised by faculties of PSM dept.

Regional Monitoring of RCH program for 3 districts, Bhavnagar, Amreli, & Junagadh

MICS : Multiindicator cluster survey : The department has assigned the job of doing MICS survey of Bhavnagar rural & Bhavnagar Urban areas in the year 2006. Amreli & Junagadh districts will be covered in next phase.

IDSP:Integrated Disease Surveillance Project

Under this program 16 major communicable diseases are reported every week to Government of Gujarat by 9 Departments of Sir T. hospital, Bhavnagar.
